ASPETTA E SPERA!

La poltroncina di velluto arancione era davvero molto comoda. Giacinto la carezzò lentamente un’altra volta e nel toccare quel tessuto dalle piccole frange morbide con i polpastrelli, provò un brividino piacevole. Frugò nella tasca della sua giacchetta per cercare una caramella da succhiare durante lo spettacolo. Ne trovò una alla menta. “Meglio scartarla adesso”-si disse- “piuttosto che disturbare dopo, quando ci sarà più gente.” E si sistemò sulla poltroncina tutto soddisfatto del suo pensiero, sentendosi proprio un brav’uomo che aveva l’accortezza di rispettare gli altri. Per la verità non c’era ancora nessuno nel teatro, tranne lui e due maschere ai lati, due ragazze giovani ed eleganti nella loro divisa blu, con i capelli chiari raccolti in uno chignon.
Ah, ci era voluto un po’di tempo, aveva pensato di non farcela, ma ci era riuscito alla fine!
Stava tornando dal lavoro, un giorno come tanti, quando aveva visto quell’annuncio. Era stato attaccato di fresco alla bacheca, si intravedevano ancora le piegoline della colla, che creavano sottili rughe sulla carta. Un po’coperti dal foglio, rimanevano i resti di un precedente volantino, che riportavano una data passata e dovevano quindi lasciare il posto ad altre. Camminando con un certo appetito verso casa, Giacinto era stato colpito da quel pezzo di carta incollato, che lampeggiava vanitoso nel suo bel giallo acceso. Era andato vicino vicino a leggere, perché non ci vedeva tanto bene da lontano. “Toh, gli artisti di casa nostra in concerto. Due talenti lirici della nostra città, con la partecipazione della bravissima ospite di Kiev, Nevenka, canteranno per noi le opere di Verdi, Puccini e altri grandi della musica. Il 27 maggio al teatro Casanova, alle ore 21.00. Vi aspettiamo numerosi.”
Giacinto rilesse l’annuncio. 27 maggio, 27 maggio…beh non aveva particolari impegni quel…che giorno era? sabato forse. Mah…sì, le partite a carte con Alberto ma niente di che, poteva inventare una scusa per saltarle. Mancavano solo dieci giorni. Talenti lirici di casa nostra. “Beh, bisogna anche conoscerli insomma, c’è gente in gamba anche qua, dopotutto, poi la lirica è sempre bella.” Pensava lungo la strada. Per tutta la sera aveva in testa quel volantino e a tavola non parlò affatto con la moglie e il figlio. “Si può sapere che cos’hai?” gli chiese Anita. “Ti hanno mangiato la lingua, al lavoro oggi?”
“No, no, ce l’ho ancora cara, è che pensavo al 27 maggio, ho visto…”
“Il 27 maggio. Compie gli anni la mamma. Ottanta tondi tondi ne fa, dobbiamo farle la festa. Una bella cenetta tutti insieme, magari al ristorante, per una volta! Vero, che la festeggiamo la nonna?” si rivolse al ragazzino, che annuì col capo, perché aveva la bocca piena.
Giacinto sentì una fitta allo stomaco. Accidenti! Il compleanno di sua suocera non ci voleva. Cercò
di convincere la moglie a cambiare idea: “Non possiamo festeggiarla la domenica invece? A pranzo, così anche lei si stanca meno.” Azzardò. “Cosa?Ma no che è bella arzilla la mia mamma! E poi lo sai che la domenica ha la messa alle undici e dopo va al cimitero a trovare papà. No, no, è meglio la sera di sabato.”
Di fronte a tali ragioni Giacinto non seppe più come ribattere. Guardò il ragazzino in cerca di un alleato, ma questo, ingoiato l’hamburger, mise il piatto nel lavello e sparì nella sua stanza.
Il 27 maggio si avvicinava. Per tutta la settimana che lo precedette, Giacinto, ogni volta che andava a lavorare, lanciava un triste sguardo alla bacheca e al foglietto giallo, che era impossibile ignorare. Aveva anche provato a proporre alla moglie di cenare in casa, presto, intorno alle sette, così poi lui avrebbe potuto andar via. Ma quella si era messa in testa di portare la madre alla trattoria dove facevano il baccalà, perché era da tanto che non mangiavano un baccalà con la polenta come una volta. Aveva già avvertito la mamma ( “bella sorpresa!”, aveva pensato Giacinto con sarcasmo) e lei naturalmente era stata tutta entusiasta e si era messa a parlare di quando lo stoccafisso costava pochissimo e lo si poteva mangiare anche più volte alla settimana, invece con i prezzi di oggi, una rarità!
“Ma perché non vuoi venire e ti inventi tutte queste scuse? Proprio vuoi dare un dispiacere a me e la mamma, nel giorno in cui fa ottant’anni?” gli si era rivolta Anita, con uno sguardo lamentoso. E lui, Giacinto, non era stato ancora capace di rispondere e nemmeno di accennare ai cantanti.
Finché, il venerdì prima del concerto, non successe qualcosa di inaspettato. L’arzilla vecchietta si sentì improvvisamente male durante il pomeriggio. Stava facendo delle scarpette di lana, come se ve ne fosse un’impellente bisogno, quando un gran caldo le partì dalle braccia e salì fino alle tempie. Due ore dopo l’avevano portata al pronto soccorso. Anita s’aggirava inquieta nel corridoio, in attesa che chiamassero sua madre. Giacinto l’aveva raggiunta dal lavoro appena aveva potuto. “Oh meno male che sei arrivato.” “Ma che cos’ha?” Chiese. “Non so, sono andata a casa, di pomeriggio a portarle un po’di spesa e l’ho trovata che era bollente. Una febbre così, all’improvviso. Chissà come mai.” Rispose la moglie, intrecciando nervosamente le dita. “Dai vedrai che non è niente di grave, in primavera…con gli sbalzi di temperatura, capita…” disse Giacinto. “Macché, è sempre stata sanissima la mamma, non sarà certo solo per un po’ di caldo.”
La signora fu ricoverata e si decise, sospettando un’infezione, di tenerla qualche giorno in ospedale. Quando il medico pronunciò il verdetto, nella testa di Giacinto sfavillò libera quella data: 27 maggio.
E fu così che il sabato sera, Giacinto aspettò in ospedale che giungesse la grande ora. L’orario di visite sarebbe terminato alle otto, mancavano pochi minuti ormai. Anita era seduta sul letto della madre e le teneva la mano. Avevano cantato tanti auguri a te reggendo un vassoio di pasticcini, per poi mangiarli sbirciati da infermieri speranzosi.
Il figlio era appoggiato al muro e ora masticava un chewing gum. Giacinto invece andava avanti e indietro per la stanza, guardando inquieto l’orologio. Le otto: doveva andare. Salutò così la suocera: “Beh, tanti auguri allora e badate di riguardarvi eh? E di mangiare quello che vi portano. Non sarà proprio come a casa, ma almeno se lo mangiate tutto, poi potrete uscire prima e andremo tutti quanti insieme a prendere il baccalà.” Anita lo guardò con gli occhi umidi di gratitudine. “Beh, adesso io dovrei andare a dire il vero. Mi incontro con Alberto, come sempre. Posso lasciarvi un po’prima?” “Andiamo anche noi tra un attimo, caro, non si può più stare qui a quest’ora.” Gli disse Anita. “Arrivederci, signora e mi raccomando mangiate!” -si accomiatò Giacinto, coi piedi già alla soglia della porta. “Non fare troppo tardi, ciao.” Gli gridò dietro Anita.
Libero. Saltellando per la strada, Giacinto raggiunse in un baleno il teatro Casanova. Era il primo. “Un biglietto per lo spettacolo di lirica!”esclamò trionfante alla donna dello sportello. Lo assalì in quell’attimo il timore che i biglietti potessero essere già esauriti. Non si era fidato a comperarli prima. Ma, per una volta, era stato fortunato. La donna, rivolgendogli un’occhiata perplessa glielo consegnò e lui voleva quasi mettersi a ballare dalla contentezza. Dopo aver pagato, scostò le pesanti tende che introducevano alla sala ed entrò. Si mise a cercare una poltroncina che fosse abbastanza vicina al palco e in posizione centrale. Ne cambiò tre, per provare da dove si vedeva meglio e alla fine gli sembrò di aver scelto proprio il posto migliore di tutto il teatro e vi si adagiò comodamente. Erano solo le otto e un quarto. Dopo una ventina di minuti, il salone cominciò ad affollarsi. Tante persone erano volti già noti a Giacinto, che aveva incrociato per caso in città, ma amici suoi non ce n’erano. Nessuno di loro si interessava di lirica. Alberto poi, figurarsi! Per fortuna poteva usare la suocera come scusa per giustificare la sua assenza alle rituali partite.
Ah, la lirica! Lui l’aveva sentita una volta sola, dal vivo. Era piccolo e suo nonno l’aveva portato all’arena di Verona a sentire il Don Giovanni e da allora gli era rimasto come un pallino in testa per quella musica. Quella volta, la voce possente del baritono lo aveva fatto sentire pieno, gonfio di una piacevole sensazione, non sapeva nemmeno lui dire che cosa fosse. Si era sentito pieno e basta, come un uovo sodo. E ora poteva provarla di nuovo. Il nonno non c’era più, ma era come se fosse stato con lui, che poteva quasi ritornare, solo per un attimo, quel bambino.
Una signorina bionda si sedette alla sua destra, dall’altra parte invece, un uomo distinto con la moglie ben truccata. Giacinto si risistemò sulla poltrona, badando di non urtare con le gambe la schiena di chi stava nella fila davanti e poi incrociò le dita sulle ginocchia, pronto a gustare la scena.
Ecco che il sipario rosso del teatro scorreva e si apriva su una bellissima signora, con un abito scintillante, che sorrideva nel mezzo del palcoscenico accanto a un pianoforte a coda. Giacinto sentì un’emozione nelle dita dei piedi che saliva formicolando fino alle gambe. Non riuscì neanche a comprendere quello che la donna diceva, per la troppa agitazione. Probabilmente aveva presentato il pianista e introdotto il primo cantante, perché un uomo stava avanzando. Com’era imponente! Con ampie falcate raggiunse la presentatrice e le baciò la mano e lei, arrossendo, sgusciò dietro le quinte. L’artista, grande e robusto con le spalle larghe stava ritto come un soldato e gli pareva un Napoleone. Chiuse gli occhi, mentre la musica, pian piano attaccava.
“Cof cof” un colpo di tosse scosse improvvisamente Giacinto. Il baritono strizzò il viso in una smorfia di concentrazione. Ma a Giacinto stava accadendo qualche cosa di strano. Sentiva un fastidiosissimo pizzicorino nella gola e voleva a tutti i costi domarlo. Lo cacciò indietro eroicamente, ma gli occhi gli lacrimarono così tanto, che la signorina bionda seduta accanto gli sussurrò “Tutto bene, signore?” lui annuì, con due lacrimoni che gli luccicavano sulle guance.
“Laaa…” iniziò il cantante. La sua voce andava in crescendo, si espandeva progressivamente per raggiungere e colmare ogni angolino della sala. Ma anche dentro di sé, Giacinto sentiva qualcosa allargarsi. Il fastidio non accennava a diminuire ed egli prese ad agitarsi ancora di più e tentò un’altra volta di ostacolarlo, reprimerlo, mandarlo giù con la saliva perché soffocasse nelle viscere. La signorina osservava perplessa la strana lotta che il suo vicino intratteneva con se stesso. Per un attimo all’uomo sembrò di avere vinto e, compiaciuto, si mise tranquillo in ascolto.
“Laa donna è mobil…qual piuma al veeee…” “COF COF COF!” Era un vulcano. Giacinto eruttò tutto il fastidio che aveva represso, vomitando potenti colpi di tosse. “COF, COF, CAUF, CAUF” Non riusciva a smettere. Il signore distinto alla sua sinistra, gli diede qualche educata pacca sulla schiena, che ebbe solo l’effetto di fargli uscire dei colpi di tosse ancora più potenti, veri e propri boati, che lo lasciavano esausto. “E di pensierEEEEEEEEEEEER” “Cof cof!”. Il cantante lanciò uno sguardo accigliato verso il pubblico, stava diventando nervoso. “eeeEEEE”… “cooOF”. Allora interruppe la canzone bruscamente, battendo stizzoso con gli stivaletti sul palco. Tutti si voltarono verso Giacinto, che era diventato bordeaux e grondava ormai di sudore. Smetteva per qualche secondo di tossire e riusciva a malapena a tirare una boccata d’aria, per poi riprendere ancora più forte di prima. Scrollò le spalle e rivolse i palmi delle mani all’aria, per giustificarsi di fronte alle occhiate indignate che gli rivolgevano le persone attorno. Il baritono batté nuovamente i piedi per terra. Ora più che Napoleone, pareva un soldatino giocattolo. “Basta, portatelo via! Non lo voglio sentire, via, viAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Urlò, perfettamente intonato. Dall’ala sinistra del teatro partirono un paio di applausi, che furono immediatamente congelati dagli altri.
Una delle due giovani maschere dai capelli chiari si avvicinò a quel punto a Giacinto e gli posò la mano sulla spalla. “Scusi”- disse tirando un po’indietro la testa per evitare spruzzi di saliva, moccio e lacrime. “Devo pregarla di uscire dal teatro, le rimborseremo il biglietto, non si preoccupi. Mi dispiace, ma altrimenti il cantante non può continuare lo spettacolo.” Giacinto non era neanche in grado di rispondere verbalmente. Con un cof cof si alzò mesto, la ragazza bionda gli mise davanti la sua giacchetta e la maschera lo accompagnò fuori, che stava ancora tossendo.
L’indomani, Giacinto andò dal medico. Dopo una visita rapida alla suocera in ospedale, attese il suo turno al pronto soccorso. Voleva vederci chiaro.
“Dottore, non so cosa mi è preso, ma una tosse improvvisa, così, senza sosta…” Spiegò. Il medico lo osservò attentamente, gli spalancò la bocca, illuminò la gola, lo tastò, lo ascoltò con lo stetoscopio, lo misurò in tutti i modi possibili.
“Caro il mio signor Olmi” -disse- “Lei non ha assolutamente nulla. È sano. La sua tosse probabilmente è stata dovuta a un’emozione troppo forte.”
“Un’emozione troppo forte…” si ripeteva Giacinto, tornando a casa. Rimuginando lungo la via, passò davanti al volantino giallo, che già si era un po’ staccato dalla bacheca e iniziava a sventolare. Da bambino non gli era mai successo nulla di simile. Pensò poi al suo matrimonio con Anita, non gli pareva di aver tossito, quel giorno. Gli venne in mente però, che quando era nato suo figlio, egli aveva preso a tossire forte forte, tanto che le infermiere lo avevano allontanato in due dalla sala parto.
E poi? Poi basta! Non c’erano state altre occasioni dove si era ritrovato a tossire così, per lo meno fino alla sera prima.
